How did Obama pay for Occidental, Columbia, Harvard and travel to Pakistan, Kenya, Indonesia and India?

I'm skeptical about the Columbia university ID.  Between the mid 80s, to early 90s, I don't recall any colleges/universities issuing IDs with bar codes.  Additionally, the style of college IDs back then was a fairly standard format and distinctly different from the picture below.
